Leonard A.'s Story

----- I was the kid that got beat up on almost daily and the girls never even took a first look at. At least till 7th grade (Westmont Elementary) where I did a 180 and adopted the "If you can't beat them, join them" philosophy and I took it literally. I call it my "fawk it" mind set. Life became more bearable when I started getting stoned in the ally with the stoners and punk rockers. ----- Met my first girlfriend in the photography dark room class at Huntington Beach HS. I was a regular visitor of Mr. Tizard (the Lizard) and Dirty Dan (the campus cop I renamed diaper Dan and the name stuck). Eventually I was kicked out of school (1980) and shipped off to grandmothers in Tucson AZ and enrolled in Sahuaro HS. ----- It's the same story there. Smoking Pot whenever I could and ditching class just as much. A lot more trouble all the way around. I eventually said "fawk it" and just took off. Stayed with friends all over Tucson and eventually was picked up by the state at the age of 16 and shipped off to my real father's house in Denver Colorado (1982). There I was enrolled in a Westminster HS. ----- Not much about this place. Went to my Jr. Prom with someone I really liked. But my past became my present. And I made some really bad choices. I was once again on my own (1983). This time it was for good. ----- I did a lot of drifting around and into a...Expand for more
lot of trouble till 1988 where I was introduced to Sheet Metal fabrication and installation. And I fell in love with it. I started my apprenticeship in Oregon 1989 but drugs were still a major factor in my life. ----- At least until 1993 and my son was conceived with the woman I thought was soul mate. On October 31, 1993, (Holloween Night) I took my last bong hit and checked into rehab. A 7 day inpatient program turned into 18 days for me. I had been homicidal and suicidal, full of rage and not caring who I wronged. The counselors felt it was in everyone's best interests if I stayed put for a while. For the next 4 years, I was still a tornado in every ones lives around me, not truly realizing and understanding the damage I had inflicting onto others though out my entire life span. But for the grace of god, I stayed clean. ----- As of October 31, 2009, I've managed to stay clean for 16 years with the help of my higher power. There have been times in the last 16 year that felt worst and or were harder to deal with then in my entire life before rehab. ----- With the loss of family, friends, dreams, and personal bitter sacrifice, life trudges on. I'm still taking it one day at a time as best I can in todays messed up economy and trying to figure out how to get back ahead of this game they call life.----- Thanks for your time, Leonard (Lenny)
